Will Rawls
Will Rawls (b. 1978, Boston, Massachusetts) is a New York-based choreographer, performance artist, curator and writer. Rawls’s choreographic work has appeared at Museum of Modern Art (2019), Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2018); Danspace Project, New York (2018); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2018), Issue Project Room, Brooklyn (2018); Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (2018); Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland (2017); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2017); MoMA PS1, Long Island City, New York (2016); Abrons Arts Center, New York (2015); and Emily Harvey Foundation, New York (2012). Rawls will use the residency to research and experiment with various art practices that engage language and performance, specifically how speech and writing share communicative properties with dance. This inquiry considers the ways in which dance and language communicate radically differently, setting up divergent yet complementary cognitive processes in both viewer and performer. Rawls will also meditate on the work of Guy de Cointet, David Hammons, as well as other Los Angeles-based artists working between performance, painting, sculpture, and language.
