Exhibitions and Publications Coordinator - Contract Position

Visitor Experience Lead
Department: Visitor Experience
Salary: $26.10 hourly
Job Summary: The Visitor Experience (VE) Lead oversees Visitor Experience Ambassadors and volunteers for the Hammer Museum in all Museum spaces (including but not limited to the galleries, Billy Wilder Theater, Annex, Box Office, and Museum courtyard) and at public programs and special events. This position is a primary point of contact during events for both Museum staff and patrons. (PT only: Approximate number of hours per week: 15-20.)
Visitor Experience Ambassadors are University students who direct, assist, engage, and monitor patrons in a positive, courteous, and professional manner for the purpose of providing a seamlessly-welcoming visitor experience. Primary responsibilities include serving as an information resource on all facets of the Museum, including exhibitions, artists, artworks, public programs and events, membership programs, ticketing, donations, and appropriate ways to interact with artworks.
Visitor Experience aims to further the Museum’s strategic plan goal to “create a seamlessly-welcoming and engaging experience, from outreach to visit,” and carry out and bolster the Hammer’s mission to and beyond the Museum’s frontlines.
Days/Hours: Approximately 15-18 hrs/week, or as needed for operations. Must be able to commit to a set schedule each quarter.
Qualifications:
- Provide exceptional customer service to Museum patrons and contribute to a seamlessly-welcoming experience in all Museum spaces and for all events, including but not limited to the Welcome Desk, Box Office, Billy Wilder Theater, public programs, special events, and galleries; remain attentive to patron needs; field and resolve complaints; guide patrons into spaces and lines; calm disturbances and resolve issues in a courteous and efficient manner
- Act as Museum point person during private, corporate and special events; serve as liaison to any special event coordinators hosting events; oversee opening of event spaces and start of events; coordinate special seating needs, including seating for patrons who arrive late
- Participate in informational sessions presented by other Museum departments, including Curatorial, Academic Programs, Public Programs, Public Engagement, and Security; attend Curatorial walkthroughs of new exhibitions to learn about the artists and artworks on view; participate in daily Visitor Experience briefings and attend quarterly Visitor Experience updates
- Remain attentive to patron interactions with artwork; provide guidance on appropriate ways to interact with artworks; enforce relevant Museum policies and procedures, including the photography policy; notify Security Department of any security or safety issues
- Coordinate distribution and collection of Museum surveys
- Coordinate all aspects of information for patrons (e.g., signs, brochures, etc.), including updating, display, and distribution; set up way-finding signage as directed
- Participate in informational sessions held by Security staff; notify Security Department of emergencies
- Perform all other patron engagement and guidance duties as assigned
- Provide onsite leadership and direction to Student Visitor Experience Ambassadors to ensure a high level of customer service to Museum patrons; assist Ambassadors in dealing with difficult patrons and situations
- Assist Assistant Manager, Visitor Experience in conducting training for Ambassadors; conduct weekly and daily Visitor Experience information briefings
- Assist Assistant Manager, Visitor Experience with scheduling as needed; anticipate staffing shortages; relieve Ambassadors for breaks

The Hammer Store seeks a part-time Store Clerk. Part-Time AV Technician, Exhibitions
Salary: $31.05 hourly
Job Summary: The Part-Time AV Technician, Exhibitions will support the AV Supervisor in providing technical assistance for the operation of exhibition spaces and the delivery of AV services throughout the Hammer Museum. The Exhibitions AV Technician will adhere to Museum policies and professional standards, ensuring the highest quality of AV service. Responsibilities include regular and seasonal maintenance to ensure safe working procedures, and addressing or escalating any safety issues as they arise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in setting up and maintaining audio, video, and power equipment for exhibitions.
- Provide general technical support based on the specific needs of each exhibition.
- Execute regular and seasonal maintenance to ensure safe working conditions.

Part-Time Security Ambassador
Salary: $21.15-$21.98 hourly; salary placement based on skills, knowledge, and experience.
The Hammer Museum’s Security Part-Time Security Officers primary responsibilities are to observe and report activities and incidents during special events/programs and interact with visitors, vendors, and employees while enforcing Museum security and safety policies. Duties include providing access and/or escorts to visitors, vendors, and employees to public/restricted area. Additional duties may include safeguarding the Museum’s collections, temporary exhibitions, property, employees, and visitors through highly proactive, appropriately preemptive, and immediately responsive action. Security Officers inspect and patrol all Museum spaces on foot; monitor and operate computerized alarm, access, and closed circuit television systems; watch for, report, and address potential security and safety hazards and problems; check entrances and exits; and perform dispatch duties. They maintain and file security logs and reports, and perform other security duties as assigned by supervisors and management.
Requirements:

Temporary Prep
Salary: $28.04-$29.76 hourly; salary placement based on skills, knowledge, and experience.
The Hammer Museum is looking for qualified, experienced, and talented individuals to join the Prep department for on-call art handling opportunities. The Prep department is responsible for the safe, conscientious handling of all artworks and materials under the museum’s care, using our wide-ranging experience and knowledge of best practices to produce professional exhibitions. As an on-call prep, the work periods would be predominantly during exhibition changeovers with occasional small projects between.
Qualifications:
- At least two years of cumulative experience in a museum environment or related, handling and installing artworks and/or artifacts.
- Knowledge of, and experience with, best practices in the handling, moving, installation, and packing of artworks. Lighting and electrical skills in a museum environment a plus.
- The ability to clearly communicate with supervisors, registrars, and fellow preparators.
- The ability to understand and follow instructions.
- The ability to work well in various installation settings; in groups, with couriers, with artists, and/or solo. The ability to work well in both high and low stress situations. Self-motivated and detail oriented.

Public Programs Student Assistant

Job Summary:
The UCLA Hammer Museum Public Programs Student Assistant position is open to UCLA undergraduate, graduate, and UCLA Extension students, with both short-term summer 2025 and long-term 2025-2026 academic year opportunities. This versatile role offers valuable experience in event production in a dynamic environment, arts administration, and public engagement. The ideal candidate is adaptable, proactive, detail oriented, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Public Program Production: Assist with event setup and cleanup, manage hospitality for guest speakers and artists, and support day-of logistics including parking validation, purchase orders, and supply pickups. Attend events, take notes for reports, interact with the public, and collaborate with museum staff.
- Administrative Support: Assist with pre-program production tasks, design program materials using tools like Canva, Adobe, and PowerPoint, and maintain accurate records and spreadsheets. Support office organization, long-term research, and logistics, while sending daily end-of-shift reports.
- Outreach Support: Distribute promotional materials around UCLA and Westwood, and represent Hammer Public Programs at student fairs, job fairs, and off-site events to engage with diverse audiences.
- Social Media & Marketing experience is not required, but is preferred.
- Support Communications Department marketing of public programs on Hammer official social media.
Please note that this position involves evening shifts and requires managing transportation to and from the Hammer Museum during late hours.
Days/Hours: Flexible hours of 4 to 20 hours per week, depending on availability and student maximum hours. Department office hours are Monday – Friday, 11 AM – 7 PM. Programs typically occur two to three times a week (afternoons to late evenings) and on weekends. Evening availability is required.

Development Student Assistant

Job Summary:
The Development Student Assistant will support the Hammer Museum development team, reporting directly to the Manager of Annual Giving, with a variety of administrative tasks related to the daily operations of the department including: support with mailing, proposal development, prospect research, archiving development related materials; support the planning and organization of donor and membership events, including the K.A.M.P, Gala and other special events; event planning such as creating invitations, event check-in, managing event inventory, event set-up/tear down, and providing guests with exceptional visitor experience.

Facilities Student Assistant

The Facilities Student Assistant is responsible for setup and breakdown for various Museum programs and events. The Facilities Student Assistant will help with tasks such as setup of tables and chairs, moving furniture, clean-up and general event duties. They will assist in all aspects of custodial and clean-up duties, including but not limited to: trash removal and disposal, sweeping, mopping, cleaning and restocking restrooms, dusting, and vacuuming of public and administration areas of the building.
Days/Hours: 15-18 hours per week; some afternoons/evenings/weekends required.
Qualifications:
- Helpful attitude and the ability to work within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to learn from the full-time staff.
- Ability to operate various types of cleaning equipment (vacuum) and move equipment and furniture (up to 40 lbs).
- Ability to read floor plans (table and chair layout) and follow instructions.
- Job requires a basic working knowledge of cleaning materials.

Frontline Ambassador

The Frontline Ambassador position aims to create a welcoming and engaging experience for visitors that carries out the Hammer’s mission. A Frontline Ambassador is responsible for engaging with the public, answering questions, providing information about the exhibitions, and promoting membership. There are additional opportunities to assist with public programs in the Billy Wilder Theater, and assist with special events. This position reports to the Associate Director, Visitor Experience and Gallery Operations with direction and oversight from Visitor Experience Leads.

The Gallery Ambassador position combines the responsibilities of art protection with museum information and art appreciation. The primary responsibility of a Gallery Ambassador is the safety of the artwork and enforcement of museum policies. A Gallery Ambassador is responsible for monitoring the gallery spaces and protecting the art while engaging with the public to answer questions and provide information about the exhibits and the Hammer. A Gallery Ambassador also provides exceptional customer service by greeting visitors as they enter the galleries and ensuring that all guests have proper access.

Student Educators participate in mandatory summer training and extensive professional development throughout the year. As the museum’s core teaching staff, student educators lead public and private tours, support family programming, and assist with curator walk-throughs. Student Educator I (Undergraduate)
Salary: $17 hourly
Job Summary:
The Hammer Museum is looking for UCLA undergraduates from diverse disciplines to serve as student educators beginning in September 2025 and working through the 2025-2026 academic year. As the museum’s core teaching staff, educators lead public and private tours in which visitors of all ages make authentic and personally relevant connections to art, one another, and the world through close looking, dialogue, inquiry, and reflection. Educators also support Art Lab, a weekly intergenerational art-making program, and may contribute to other education initiatives.
Educators participate in a year-long, paid training program that explores special exhibitions and collections, and Hammer’s pedagogy for facilitating conversations about works of art. They are responsible for researching artworks and leading an average of three to six tours per month. Educators also facilitate an average of one Art Lab per month and engage in special projects. By serving as educators, students gain in-depth knowledge about Hammer exhibitions and collections; acquire experience in the museum and education fields; and improve their research, teaching, and communication skills. Spanish-speaker preferred.
Days/Hours: 5-10 hours/week depending on tour schedule (three office hours and a three-hour training each week scheduled between Mon-Friday 10am-6pm, plus additional weekday and weekend tour and program times, as scheduled). Appointment starts mid-September and will run for the full academic year; option to renew.
Qualifications:
- Registered UCLA undergraduate students only. Preference for rising sophomores and juniors who may be able to continue the position for multiple academic years.
- Interest in culture, arts, or nonprofits.
- 1-2 years of teaching or tutoring experience.
- Ability to organize and present complex information effectively to a range of audiences, including students and the public.
- Skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to conduct basic academic research.
- Ability to pay attention to detail, work independently, and follow through on assignments.
- Ability to work weekends when needed.

As the museum’s core teaching staff, educators lead public and private tours in which visitors of all ages make authentic and personally relevant connections to art, one another, and the world through close looking, dialogue, inquiry, and reflection. Graduate student educators will also lead special tours for private groups and university classes. Educators also support Art Lab, a weekly intergenerational art-making program, and may contribute to other education initiatives.
Educators participate in a year-long, paid training program that explores special exhibitions and collections, and Hammer’s pedagogy for facilitating conversations about works of art. They are responsible for researching artworks and leading an average of three to six tours per month. Educators also facilitate an average of one Art Lab per month and engage in special projects. Graduate student educators are expected to work independently at a high level of rigor with minimal supervision.
