Students gain professional experience through yearlong and summer internships at the Hammer. Yearlong internships are offered for credit for UCLA students. Paid summer internships are offered through the Getty Marrow Internship program. Positions are offered in departments including curatorial, communications, development, and programs, among others.

Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship - Curatorial 

The Hammer Museum’s Academic Programs internship will provide an undergraduate student with a comprehensive overview of the museum’s educational programming for community, university, K-12 and adult audiences. Working with the museum’s Academic Programs department on a full-time basis for ten weeks, the intern will provide research, and administrative and logistical support for programs across all audiences. Specific projects include supporting the facilitation of Art Lab, the Hammer’s drop-in artmaking program for multigenerational audiences; assisting with programs for UCLA medical students and residents; and supporting the preparation of K-12 educational materials and programming for Made in L.A. 2025, the Hammer’s biennial of L.A.-based artists. The intern will also meet with key staff from other museum departments to gain a broader perspective on professional duties and possible career paths within a museum.

This will be a full-time in-person internship that will be administered with guidance from UCLA policy for health and safety. The intern will have a dedicated workspace with desk, chair, computer, and phone, as well as full access to office supplies, printers, etc. All needed work files and supplementary resources such as books and other printed research materials will be available at the intern's provided computer. If needed, we will provide a laptop to the intern. The intern will participate in weekly or twice-weekly department meetings, weekly meetings with supervisors, and additional meetings as needed for projects and cross-departmental working groups. In addition, supervisors and teams will communicate over email and Slack.

Successful candidates will have excellent written and oral communication skills, some teaching or tutoring experience, and an interest in contemporary art. Academic Programs interns are required to work Tuesday – Saturday.

The internship is a full-time (40 hours/week) position, with an hourly rate of $17.88, for a consecutive ten-week work period between June 2 and August 22, 2025.

Eligibility:

• Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate in either a bachelor’s degree program or an associate’s degree program. Students must have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June. Students who graduated the semester or quarter immediately before the internship begins are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)
• Attend college in or be a permanent resident of LA County; and
• Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (non-citizen authorized to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis; also known as a "green card" holder). Students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status valid through the internship period are also eligible.

The Hammer Museum’s Curatorial department oversees a dynamic schedule of temporary special exhibitions, as well as five collections located at the museum and on the UCLA campus. The Getty Marrow Curatorial internship position will focus on the Hammer’s upcoming group exhibition. Working on a full-time basis for ten weeks, the student selected for this internship will work within the museum’s database (specifically on The Museum System), complete research projects around contemporary and historical artists in the exhibition and learn more about exhibition planning and development. In addition to working with the Curatorial team, the intern will meet with key staff from other museum departments to gain a broader perspective on professional duties and possible career paths within a museum.
