Hammer Projects: Renata Petersen

Renata Petersen’s (b. 1993, Guadalajara) installation at the Hammer Museum explores the histories of new age religious sects that are specific to the region of Southern California. Conceived as an immersive environment that embraces the totality of the Hammer’s Vault Gallery, Petersen’s architectural intervention offers a contemporary reinterpretation of Giotto di Bondone’s Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy. This presentation marks Petersen’s first exhibition in the United States and one of the artist’s most significant undertakings to date.

Hammer Projects: Renata Petersen is organized by Aram Moshayedi, interim chief curator

Hammer Projects are single-gallery exhibitions highlighting the work of contemporary artists from around the globe, often presenting new work at a pivotal moment of an artist’s development. Ongoing since 1999, Hammer Projects is a signature series within the Hammer’s exhibition program.

Hammer Projects is presented in memory of Tom Slaughter and with support from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation. Lead funding is provided by the Hammer Collective. Generous support is provided by Susan Bay Nimoy and Leonard Nimoy. Additional support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture, and Good Works Foundation and Laura Donnelley.

Hammer Projects: Renata Peterson is made possible, in part, by Susan Bay Nimoy and Leonard Nimoy.

Special thanks to Amaury Vergara for supporting the development of Renata Petersen’s work for the exhibition.
