The Hammer’s fourth annual Bloomsday celebration is fueled by the musicality and raucous dialogue defining the “Sirens” episode of James Joyce’s Ulysses. A playful arrangement of words belies heavier meanings and reaches farther than the sexual appeal of two barmaids in this year’s staged dramatic reading by actors Jane Bacon, Bairbre Dowling, James Gallo, James Lancaster, John Rafter Lee, and Johnny O’Callaghan. The public is invited to participate in a reading of the “Lestrygonians” episode from Ulysses in the Hammer courtyard, where festivities include live Irish music by The Sweet Set, Guinness Happy Hour all day, and Irish fare from Ammo at the Hammer. Bloomsday at the Hammer is organized once again by Stanley Breitbard, James Joyce enthusiast. Musical director and pianist Paul Floyd is joined by baritone John Atkins and tenor Robert MacNeil.
