Dyeing with Roots and Blooms: An Introduction to Natural Dyeing, with Cayetano Talavera

  • to This is a past program

As part of his Breath(e) project, Grounded, Ron Finley hosts a series of workshops in his temporary garden at the Hammer Museum, led by local artists. Each workshop can accommodate up to 20 participants, with all materials provided by the instructors. Availability is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis, with a sign-up sheet available in the museum lobby starting one hour before the program.

Work with fiber artist and fashion designer Cayetano Talavera to learn to extract dyes from madder roots and marigolds as we explore the art of natural dyeing. Using resist dyeing techniques, participants will create unique patterns on a cotton bandana, leaving with a personalized creation and a newfound appreciation for natural dyeing.
